David Solomons has released a book of his black and white street work from 1990-2007. He works primarily in color these days but after viewing this book I can say he’s equally as skilled at black and white. The book includes 86 photographs and for those familiar with his work through Flickr, there are numerous that you can’t find online. It’s a great book by one of the most dedicated street photographers working today.

There is no thematic thread, no personal agenda pawing to be let in at the corners of the frame. He shows no desire to be in there, because the fundamental joy of seeing begs for humility and silence. A longer, larger, richer picture is coming into focus. There are no geographical markers in Jeppesen’s photographs. There is no clear text, no giveaway ethnicity or landmark that places the picture on the map. Human characters move slowly and deliberately if they move at all, and they don’t interact with one another. Technology is often present, often looming large, but humans do not interact with it. There’s no palpable enjoyment in that relationship. Perhaps this sounds very drab. Do let me tell you where the action is. - Essay by William Pym

Bold and italics are mine. That sentence and the larger idea it represents have been on my mind for awhile now, even before I happened to read it in that essay. The ever constant struggle between representation and abstraction is what makes good photography so interesting. Somehow, Jeppesen pulls it off nicely in his work.

Continental Bounce is a collection of photographs taken during Magda Biernat’s recent one year, around the world journey. Together with her husband Ian, she traveled across three continents, Africa, Asia and Oceania visiting a cross section of diverse cultures.

In this selection of photos, Biernat has found common patterns that emerge in the variety of textural landscapes through which they traveled. She explores beyond the famous icons in tourist brochures into the homes and lives of the people whom they met and were befriended by on their journey. What emerges is a quiet and often intimate reflection of the similarities of lives and landscape around the world.

I attended an interesting presentation of this work at Half King in Chelsea last night. There was a slideshow that traced the journey and several humorous and interesting anecdotes deftly told by Ian. The work is far more nuanced than your typical travel photography, which you would expect after browsing Magda’s work. She admits being more comfortable shooting architecture but on this trip she found herself shooting a good number of portraits of people they encountered along the way.

The entire work and collaboration is impressive and worth spending sometime checking out. There’s a wonderful website that chronicles the entire journey.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly “10% of book and print sales will go towards construction of a new well in Olosho-Oiber, a Maasai village in Rift Valley, Kenya.” According to Magda and Ian, the circumstances in Kenya are rather dire due to a devastating drought, so you’ll not only be purchasing a great book, but you’ll be helping out at great cause. I’m sure Madga and Ian would appreciate spreading the word as well.

This is another book in Raoul’s collection that I paged through frequently while I was at his place. Another of example of the ‘democratic forest’ approach that I find appealing. It’s always inspiring to find books that don’t necessarily obey any hard of fast rules about narrative, sequencing or structure.
